How do I make sense of the evidence?

Earlier in the course, you planned and videotaped an interview with one child. We hope you were able to step away from teaching for a while and listen to the child's ideas. While this one-on-one interviewing isn't practical for the classroom, it lays the groundwork for listening to your students in new ways and for developing productive questioning strategies.

This week, you'll use your transcript of your conversation to take a close look at your questions and the child's ideas. In this session, you'll also take a critical look at the process of planning and carrying out your interview.

Understanding goals

  • Understand that what children say, their actions, and their artifacts such as drawings, writing, and concept maps provide evidence of their thinking.
