| Description: | The surface of the endometrium is covered by a columnar/pseudostratified columnar epithelium. Coiled glands extend into the stroma (except in the caruncles). The secretory activity of the glands (with secretory and ciliated cells) is under the influence of estrogen and progesterone. The superficial layer of the endometrium is called the functional zone (stratum functional is) and is lost (partially or fully) after pregnancy or after estrus.
