Equine Obstructive Airway Disease Histopathology
Description: This slide shows higher magnification of an large airway from a horse with obstructive airway disease. There is bronchoconstriction, thickening of the airway wall, and accumulation of excess mucus and inflammatory cells in the airway lumen. All these changes are a result of the late phase mast cell response. The mast cells are responding to cross linking of surface IgE caused by allergens in hay dust. This is a common hypersensitivity response in horses, and many affected animals respond well to being kept at pasture and out of the barn environment.
