Equine Obstructive Airway Disease Histopathology
Description: This slide shows low magnification histopathology of an equine lung with obstructive lung disease. There are numerous inflammatory cells centered around the airways. The alveoli are free of inflammation. This is an airway disease, and the parenchyma is spared. The inflammatory cells are recruited by chemotactic mediators (such as leukotriene B4) that are released by mast cells as part of the late phase response. The arachidonic acid mediators, especially leukotrienes C,D, and E4, cause bronchoconstriction, airway wall edema, and recruitment of inflammatory cells that enhance the immediate hypersensitivity response.
