Equine Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Description:This slide shows a severely debilitated horse suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The syndrome affects small airways, resulting in severe bronchoconstriction. The horse must work very hard to exhale, and the respiratory pattern is described as "heaving." There is hypertophy of abdominal muscles to assist exhalation, and the resulting muscle definition is called a "heave line."
