Rodents: Mycoplasma pulmonis
Description:Mycoplasma pulmonis causes murine respiratory mycoplasmosis in rodents.  It is very contageous and results in severe pneumonia, BALT hyperplasia, and bronchiectasis.  The slide on the left shows a cross section of the pharyngeal region in a rat.  Lateral to the pharynx, note the ear canals filled with purulent material.  Otitis media is common with mycoplasmal infection in rats.  The lower lung lobe in the slide on the right has multiple distended nodular areas.  In the next slide, they are revealed as dilated, pus-filled airways on cut section.
