Description:

When Mannheimia is opsonized in the presence of  antibody, macrophages effectively engulf the organisms. Unfortunately, the bacteria produce a toxin that results in macrophage death and lysis.  Initial efforts at vaccine development actually resulted in more extensive pneumonic lesions due to this effect.
