Thoracocentesis
Description:This slide shows the process of thoracocentesis, or pleural tap, in the horse. After confirmation of pleural effusion by percussion or ultrasound, a blunt teat cannula is introduced between ribs after sterile prep of the skin, lidocaine block, and stab incision. The teat cannula has attached a closed 3-way stopcock to prevent air from entering the pleural space. After the teat cannula is carefully advanced into the pleural space, fluid can be aspirated, or in this case, the excessive fluid can be drained by gravity. 7 liters were obtained from each side from this mare. The fluid can be cultured, used for cytology, and used to quantitate cell number, since no saline is introduced before aspiration.
