Trantracheal Aspirate Gram Stain
Description:This slide shows gram stain of a transtracheal aspirate cytology specimen. The blue gram positive organisms are most likely Streptococcus zooepidemicus, the most common cause of equine pneumonia. Neutrophils and macrophages can be seen with engulfed organisms. These cytology results can be used to guide antimicrobial therapy until culture and sensitivity results become available.
