Transtracheal aspiration cytology
Description:This slide shows ciliated airway epithelial cells obtained during a transtracheal wash. Some airway cells are dislodged by the aspiration procedure, and this is a normal finding. These cells confirm that the sample has come from the airway, and not from the pharyngeal region. A pharyngeal wash can occur when, for example, a horse coughs during the procedure and the tubingbecomes curved upward into the pharynx rather than downward toward the distal trachea. A pharyngeal sample with be contaminated with normal pharyngeal flora and usless for culture.
