Transtracheal Aspiration in the Horse
Description: This slide shows the procedure for transtracheal aspiration in the horse. The horse is restrained, and the mid-tracheal region has been surgically prepared and anesthetized with lidocaine. After a stab incision, a large trochar has been introduced into the tracheal lumen between cartilage rings. Sterile tubing has been introduced through the trochar and advanced down the trachea. Sterile saline is flushed into the trachea and aspirated. The sample is used for cytology and gram stain. It cannot be used for cell quantitation, because the return volume of aspirated saline is variable.
