E1b-2:Reticular Fibers & Neurofibrils, Silver Stain
| PREV : A2-11:Ductus Epididymidis, Silver Stain |
| Stain: | Silver Stain |
| Description: | Cross section of a peripheral nerve showing portions of numerous nerve fibers stained with a silver reaction. Most of the nerve fibers are myelinated; a small group of unmyelinated fibers are seen at center of field. The "bulls-eye" appearance of the myelinated fibers is due to 1) centrally-placed blackened axons (containing silver-stained neurofibrils), 2) pale "halo" of extracted myelin lipid (largely unstained), and 3) blackened areas around neurilemma (containing silver-stained type III collagen components of reticular fibers in endoneurium). The fine unmyelinated axons also stain with silver due to their neurofibrils. (ag01) |
