J13r-1:Liver, Kupffer Cell
| PREV : J13i-1:Liver, Kupffer Cells |
| Stain: | Trypan Blue & Safranin & Orange G |
| Description: | Section of liver at high magnification showing hepatocytes, sinusoidal capillaries, and a liver macrophage (Kupffer cell) containing blue phagocytic granules. In this preparation, the liver was infused with the vital dye trypan blue prior to biopsy. During this interval, the Kupffer cells, which are located along the luminal surfaces of the sinusoids and are members of the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS), ingested the dye particles thereby coloring their phagocytic vesicles. Trypan blue and other vital dyes are commonly used to localize members of the MPS, which are otherwise difficult to detect in routine preparations. Nuclei, including those of the abundant hepatocytes (liver parenchymal cells), are stained with the red basic dye safranin in order to provide good contrast with the trypan blue localization. Note the binucleate hepatocyte to the right of center. (ag01) |
