Description:Blood smear showing a lymphocyte, an agranular leukocyte that is important in the immune response, surrounded by erythrocytes. The lymphocyte nucleus stains polychromatically, whereas the surrounding thin rim of basophilic cytoplasm stains orthochromatically. This cytoplasmic basophilia is due to the presence of RER and free ribosomes. The small pale region in the cytoplasm just to the left of the nucleus is due to the unstained Golgi. (ag01)
