H2gm-10:Epidermis, Stratum Granulosum
| PREV : H1-1:Epidermis & Dermis, Thin Skin, SSKE |
| Stain: | H&E |
| Description: | Section of thick skin at high magnification showing portions of the strata of the epidermis. The keratinocytes containing 1) large euchromatic nuclei with basophilic nucleoli, and 2) numerous basophilic cytoplasmic granules are located in the stratum granulosum. Note the distribution of the granules in this stratum: an increase in granule density can be seen from the bottom of the field toward the top, indicating increased accumulation as the cells move more superficially. The acidophilia of the remaining portions of the cytoplasm is due to the abundant tonofibrils (bundles of cytokeratin filaments). At the top of the field, the keratinocytes in the stratum corneum have lost their nuclei and are now characterized entirely by cytoplasmic acidophilia. (ag01) |
